Dogon Granary Door #20

$ 359.00

This door protected the window-like opening into each family's grain storage building, and used a simple sliding door lock. The doors are constructed from smaller pieces of wood that are connected together with handmade metal hardware. The window-like openings on the granaries are covered with these which have simple, functioning latches. The posts sticking up on top and bottom serve as hinges for the door as they rest in holes.

Primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards and scenes of life symbolically served to protect the entrance by making it sacrosanct. The low reliefs are carved on several panels.

Some granary doors will show heavy patina, sometimes including African repair. You will receive the exact door shown.
